Construction continues in Lincoln County as Fidium will soon light-up the Waldoboro with future-proof connectivity
WALDOBORO, Maine – Feb. 7, 2025 – Fidium is expanding its all-fiber internet network in Waldoboro, and parts of Nobleboro, bringing symmetrical, multi-gig speed internet to more than 4,400 homes and businesses. Fiber infrastructure construction is scheduled to begin as soon as February 15, with exact start dates varying by location.
“This is a great opportunity coming to Waldoboro,” said Max Johnstone, director of Planning and Development for the Town of Waldoboro. “We are very fortunate to have had so many people, including volunteers, Fidium, and public sector staff, helping to make this a reality. Just to have every resident with access to the internet is an accomplishment, but affordable rates and high speeds allows this to be an investment that pays for itself year after year.”
Fiber expansion is being funded in part through a grant from the Maine Connectivity Authority, with additional funding from Lincoln County American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) grants and private investment from Fidium. As a result of this investment, Fidium will increase access to fiber broadband access across Lincoln County, with construction already underway for more than 8,300 homes and businesses in Wiscasset, Whitefield, and Edgecomb, as well as parts of Alna and Westport Island. Expansion is also planned for Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor, Dresden, and Southport, as well as Woolwich, in Sagadahoc County.
Fiber broadband is a future-proof technology that can be easily upgraded without rewiring the entire network. Fiber networks are more sustainable than other technologies with significantly lower power needs and reduced use of plastics. Fiber optic cables are not susceptible to corrosion or electrical interference making them more resilient to extreme weather conditions, including high winds, lightning strikes and floods. Fiber networks require less overall repair and maintenance and boasts up to 67% faster repair times than other wired technologies. Fidium’s expansion will upgrade internet access for Lincoln County, offering benefits that come with fiber broadband access, including improved educational outcomes, reduced healthcare costs and enhanced economic opportunities.
"Superior speeds, low latency and high reliability make fiber an unmatched technology, and Fidium’s expansion brings this future-proof connectivity to Waldoboro and across Lincoln County,” said Sarah Davis, vice president of Market Development for Fidium. “Fiber transforms how we live and work, powering new entertainment, educational and economic opportunities that were not previously accessible. We appreciate the community’s patience, as we will be working over the next several months to expand our all-fiber network and upgrade locations to access Fidium’s multi-gig speed symmetrical service.”
Today, more than 240,000 Maine homes and businesses have access to Fidium, with more connectivity coming soon across the state. To check your address for service availability, visit FidiumFiber.com.
Fiber network construction requires installing new fiber optic lines along roads and in public utility areas and may include digging and climbing of utility poles. Crews will be working along the edge of private property within the public right-of-way and/or public utility easements. This work may require temporary traffic detours, and some noise and dust. Paint markings and/or flags may be placed in areas where construction is active. Flags will be removed once work is complete in the area. Crews will work quickly, clean up after themselves and always strive to minimize disruption.
More information on the fiber build progress will be shared with town and city officials, as well as residents. Mailers, door hangers and construction alerts will be distributed to keep the public informed, and Fidium representatives will be visiting neighborhoods to share more about what to expect during construction, and how to sign up to be the first notified as soon as service is ready to install.
